Isola dell'arte (Island of Art) was founded in 2003 in Milan by a group
of artists and critics with aim of collaborating with people who live
in the Isola area for saving a discarded factory, the Stecca degli
Artigiani, and the gardens beside it , which both risk to be dismantled
by the Comune di Milano for the new urban regeneration. The Isola, one
of the historical labour areas of Milan, is now characterized by
several changes. The Stecca, ex industrial building owned by the
municipality, has been used for a long time by artisans and for
cultural activities. The urban development plan programmes to bui.ld in
this area towers and streets. This would be a risk for the urban
quality of the neighborhood; that is why collective were founded to
suggest alternative solutions for regeneration.
